Hi! Thanks for the video. I am curious about how this pulls the recti together. It seems like it’s just pulling the skin? Do you feel that you actually have the muscle moving together in the midline? Thanks!
Hey Katie!
Thanks for checking it out! Kinesiotaping doesn’t physically pull the recti together but rather acts on the skin and fascia (the thin layer of stretchy tissue that lies between the skin and muscles) to encourage proper movement patterns. It has a few benefits for diastasis recti… The input from the tape increases awareness to the area and gives your body a constant reminder to engage your transverse abdominis, especially when fatigued. This in turn helps pull the abdominals closer to the midline. It also slightly pulls the skin away from the fascia which helps the muscle underneath move in a more coordinated and smooth manner. Unfortunately there isn’t any high quality research on kinesiotaping for diastasis recti but there is a growing body of evidence supporting kinesiotaping in general, especially after injury!
