Meal Kit Delivery: Reviews, Comparisons, and Coupons

What is a meal kit, and why do I need this in my life?

Updated 8/11/2016
So I was chatting with one of my lovely university friends this morning, and we were talking about how it can be so challenging this time of year to make healthy dinners! Long work days, paired with dark evenings and long to do lists causes us to resort to pick up take out or eat a bag of popcorn instead (no joke, this was staple meal of mine in my past life). So when someone asks me how do you do it?! The answer is….meal delivery. I’m not talking about the mushy, pre-cooked meals that they deliver to elderly people. Try gourmet recipes, fresh ingredients, organic produce, and pre-measured spices, delivered right to my door. Yup, that’s the kind of meal kit and grocery delivery I’m talking about!

A few months back I was turned on to meal kit delivery by another mom. Before then, I had no idea this existed! So I went on a mission to try a different one every week for a month. In my investigating I also found new ones that I didn’t know about before so I am here to compare them all, I have personally tried most of these, and lets just say, my husband was very happy I took on this project. I started writing this blog post months ago, but never finished it up until now, so I hope you appreciate the product of months of cooking and googling! I obviously am limited to companies that deliver in California, so although there are so many awesome companies out there I started with these ones.

Green Chef has really stepped up their game lately! The portion sizes are amazing…the recipes have been super tasty and they now color code everything to make it fool proof! I love that there is always a good variety to choose from each week. We usually chose the paleo options but if there was something we didn’t like there are lots other options to choose from instead.
All organic healthy meals.
Husbands favorite, large portion sizes. You get what you pay for!
Awesome flavors! Really feel like we are eating gourmet food every night.
Meat was always super fresh and arrived cold.
Most things come already measured and prepped, less time spent cutting up and measuring ingredients. Most of these meals take less than 20 minutes.
I like that you can recreate the recipes on your own if its something you really like. Provide recipe and cooking instructions online!
Great customer service, had an issue with a box and they got back to me right away and fixed the matter super quick!
Most expensive

They don’t re-use their packaging (that I know of!). Lots of little containers and other items that I threw away.

Sun Basket

Get 3 Meals Free from Sun Basket! Fresh organic ingredients and easy recipes delivered, with Paleo, Gluten-free and Vegetarian options.

Sun Basket and Green Chef are fairly comparable, but in terms of recipe wise this one is my favorite. It works for my family and they always incorporate different and new flavors that change each season depending on whats fresh.
Recipes are great, a good variety of food and multiple options to choose from each week.
Awesome FLAVORS! I can’t get over all the new spices and recipes I have tried and loved. Foods I would never think of making.
Meals are balanced and filling.
Portion size is average, with more than enough vegetables.
Organic produce and grass-fed fresh meat.
Price is reasonable and works out being less expensive than grocery shopping! (I tracked this over 2 months and compared, yes I am a nerd like that)
They REUSE their packaging! They give you a label to send everything back every 2 weeks.
Each meal comes in it’s own paper bag (doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it makes it that much easier)
Nutritionist designs meals so there are the proper balance of protein, fat and carbs.
Have video tutorials on how to make the food.
No tracking on the boxes, and they get delivered very late on Wednesday night, so I often can’t make the food until the next day. Not Sun Basket’s fault, but still annoying. Take between 15-30 minutes to prepare.

I really loved this service for the simplicity, low cost ($40-$60/week!) quick delivery, and the fact that you could order meals off an app. That being said, they have since discontinued their delivery service. So I won’t go into a full review. No longer available for delivery. Check out their app or website for great recipes! I still use their recipes often when I need to think of easy meals to cook.

I LOVE this meal kit for weeks that we are SUPER busy and I don’t have time to think about dinner. The main PRO…all the meals take only 10 minutes and there is NO prep work involved. Literally take the food out, cook the meat and vegetables and warm up the side dish in the microwave. Their recipes have really improved lately and I like that they tell you how to plate it and add the gourmet touches. Healthy choices for the most part!

Convenient, affordable, tasty.

Portion size a little small.

Great for weeks that you know are really busy and won’t have time to spend in the kitchen.

Reuse their packaging and allow you to print a return shipping label to send it back.

Meals can be prepared as dairy-free, nut-free, or gluten-free by withholding certain ingredients that will be packed separately in the dinner kit. Not guaranteed to be exclusively dairy free or nut free, etc.

Limited choice of recipes each week, no paleo option.

Bulu Box Review

What is a Bulu Box? Is it just another monthly subscription box of samples that end up piled in the corner of my vanity? NO! Bulu Box is so much better!

I got the opportunity to sample Bulu Box this month. I must admit, I am a subscription box junkie. I love them. I like surprises and I love getting mail (ohhhh the things that excite us as we get older..haha).

So here’s the deal…

Lets be honest, finding time to workout with a baby at home is challenging! Between feedings, naps, diaper changes, playtime, work, and attending to other duties, there isn’t much time left!

Do you have a baby or child who enjoys babywearing? Do you have 30 minutes in your day in which you find yourself having to entertain your child or carry them around to keep them happy? Why not use that time to try some babywearing workouts!

Product Review: Mika Yoga Wear

Product Review:

Mika Yoga Clothing

mika yoga wear

So I will start by saying I am a very loyal Lululemon customer. I blame it on the fact that I am from Canada, working in the fitness industry for so long, and taking advantage of the 15% discount. This has left me with quite the collection of workout clothes! That being said, my ‘after baby’ body is a little different so some of my stuff wasn’t fitting right. I decided to branch out and try something new, and hey, it’s an excuse to buy new stuff!

After seeing it on instagram I looked into this new(er) brand, Mika. You can check our their website here. After stalking their website for a couple weeks I decided to finally take the plunge and order something! I immediately regretted it, how could I ever love other yoga clothes as much as I love my lulus? On a side note, I tell my husband about this ‘new brand’ and he informs me that his friend and his wife just randomly happen to be the people behind it! Small world…I feel like I personally know a celebrity now! Haha, so let me start off by saying Mr. S, you and your wife have definitely impressed me. Here is my honest review of the Mika yoga clothes I purchased.

First off I bought the Aerial Capri in size M/L in Amazonite (teal), and the Tula Top in pink ribbon (hot pink). The price point is amazing, most items range from $15-70, which means I can get an entire outfit for the price of one pair of lulu pants, AND things actually go on sale! I was pleasantly surprised with the fast shipping, nice quality fabric, and good workmanship of the clothes as I took them out of the package.

What I love

– Great colors and prints, I am OBSESSED with teal blue so the pants were the perfect color.
– Good stretch to the fabric, held up well in the wash, looks clean and professional
– Pants are not see through! They are a heavy but comfy material that doesn’t stretch too much and show through when you bend over.
– Top can double as a bathing suit! How awesome. I should mention that a lot of their clothes are designed for hot yoga, so this is a great feature!
– Got me through my workout wicking away sweat and looking cute to boot.
– Free shipping over $100
– Love that they take customer feedback and make changes accordingly! I ordered the old style Tula top, but there was feedback that it wasn’t suitable for large breasted women so they revamped it and released a new style…how great!
– Top is adjustable and ties in the back! This is great for a perfect fit every time (which I have noticed is a problem with other tops since I have been nursing).
– These clothes are not just for yoga, definitely suitable for all kinds of activities.

What I don’t love…

– The sizing is kind of funky. I am usually a size 6, so I looked at their size chart and ordered the size M/L pants accordingly. Maybe it’s just my body shape but I found them to fit quite small (felt like they were pulling down the back a little) so I would probably go with a L/XL, but then that just makes me feel bad since I’ve never been an XL in my life!
– I liked the idea of wearing the top as a bathing suit but didn’t see any bottoms on the site that would be suitable to match. Now this may be just me because I’m picky like that.
– Lastly, the colors were slightly different than what I expected from the online pictures… but I loved them more in person!

Overall I give them two thumbs up. Love the product, love the price. Just ordered myself some more! I’m excited to add some variety to my workout wardrobe, and im loving the bright colors for spring!

Check them out on instagram #MikaYogaWear they have awesome yogi ambassadors showing off their clothes!!

Fitbit Flex Review

Fitbit flex reviewDecided to write a quick review on my Fitbit flex. My little one is sleeping so I know I only have 30 minutes (she’s not really into naps, which makes it hard to get anything done, ugh)…and GO. I really like this product so that is why I am sharing this review with all of you! I did not receive compensation for writing this review. First off, I bought my fitbit last Christmas as a present to myself. Bought it here . I had been using the step tracker on my phone and found that pretty motivating so decided to shell out the extra cash and take it up a notch. Now if you are familiar with the fitbit lineup there are a few different models. I decided to get the flex for a few reasons, a) I wear a watch for work everyday so I didn’t need the fancier model that has the time display b) I wanted one to wear on my wrist and not clip on my clothes and c) It was in my price range as I decided I wanted to spend $80-$100. I chose the fitbit over other brands because they seemed to have the best reviews out of others that I read comparing multiple brands. This product is excellent for those people who live a fairly sedentary lifestyle but are looking for simple ways to add some more activity in their lives (e.g. office workers). It is great for all other populations as well as it brings awareness as to how much or how little you are moving everyday! I really like the fitbit app, it is easy to use, easy to view, and I have never had any problems with my fitbit syncing with my iPhone over Bluetooth. Lately I have been using it in conjunction with MyFitnessPal app (which I will also write a review on one day) and this has been interesting because it actually ‘lets you’ eat the calories that you walked off throughout the day! I am still not entirely sure how this is calculated because it seems to change throughout the day, but I trust their science on that one. What this means is if I was tracking calories and I was nearly at my daily goal and hadn’t ate dinner yet I knew I had to get moving somehow if I wanted to stay within that limit. Personally, I’m not a calorie counting kind of person, but this strategy works for a lot of people. It is small, easy to clean, comes in cool colors (which I REALLY need to get some new bands for mine because when I bought it I think it only came in blue or black and now they have fancy pink and turquoise ones!). I like that it gives me an alert when I am within 2000 steps of my goal, usually this motivates me to do some extra cleaning around the house or take the dog out for a walk. Also it has a wicked battery life, I think I charge it about once a week and mine is a year old!

Some negatives include, a) not sure how accurate it is at times, for example, when I burp the baby because I am moving my hand back and forth it counts that as steps. b) The band isn’t the greatest at staying fastened, it has fallen off at times at the grocery store or the gym when I go to pick something up, but there are probably better clasps to put on the band but I just haven’t looked into that yet. Anyways, it would suck if it fell off and I didn’t notice. So bottom line…whether you are a nurse who is on their feet all day, an office worker who needs to increase their daily step count or a stay at home mom like me who can do 10,000 steps without leaving the house get this device! Anything that will help develop accountability is awesome, and by even increasing your step count by 2000 steps a day (which is easy as pie) you will burn an extra 60-100 calories. It might not seem like much but every little bit counts!
